ICE CAVE TOUR
ICE CAVE TOUR - HALF DAY
24.900 ISK Per Person (Small group tour) (November to March)
ABOUT THE TOUR
Our half-day tour begins with a 4x4 ride in a modified Land Rover Defender into the glacial valley, heading towards Breiðamerkurjökull, one of Vatnajökull´s glacial outlets. From there, we begin our hike across the valley towards the glacier. The 2km hike offers unique views of the mountains surrounding the glacier, building excitement and anticipation as we get closer to the edge of the ice.
Before we step onto the ice and enter the cave, we will go over a safety brief and get geared up with crampons and helmets. From here, the real adventure begins.
We’ll enter the cave under the natural ice arch that the glacial river has formed. This part of the cave offers amazing photos and a very immersive experience. Once inside the cave, take a moment to experience the glacier in 360 degrees - feel the water droplets falling from the cave ceiling, hear the sound of the glacial river next to your feet and touch the crystal blue ice on the cave walls. The Sapphire cave is one of the most vibrant and beautiful ice formations created by the Vatnajökull glacier, and will not be around forever. Soak in the sensory experience created by this cave, for this is an experience that you will share with only a few people in the world. Admire the breathtaking beauty of nature’s artwork.
We spend around 45 minutes exploring the Sapphire ice cave. Our experienced guides will give you tips and tricks for capturing the best photos of the most beautiful places. We will also share local knowledge of the area, the glacier and the surrounding glacial terrain.
After the cave we will hike back out the same way we came in, jump back into the Land Rover Defender and make our way back to the Glacier Lagoon.
THE SAPPHIRE ICE CAVE
The Sapphire Ice Cave honors its name with an array of blue & green hues and sculpture-like details. Surround yourself with magnificent blue ice and live the experience that our travelers often consider as “magical”. The Sapphire Ice Cave is unique due to several characteristics. With its many moulins and one massive opening to the sky it gives you various astonishing viewpoints for the camera and the eye alike. As the glacial river moved out the previous ground floor it seems like the cave is settled on two levels. As is nature’s way, glaciers and ice caves are ever-changing dynamic living formations that will be last seen by you and only a handful of others.
