THE PLAN

​

Our Glacier Walk Journey begins with a 4x4 ride in a modified Land Rover Defender heading towards one of the Vatnajökull glacial outlets. Once we get close, we will walk through recently shaped landscapes and over moraines to reach the edge of the glacier. Before we embark and take our first steps, we will take you through a safety brief as well as equipping everyone with crampons, harness, helmets and an ice axe. From here we take our first steps on the glacier. Entering the cave, take a moment to stand in awe and admire the breathtaking beauty of nature’s artwork.  

 

We spend between 30 to 45 minutes exploring the Sapphire ice cave before we continue our journey onto the glacier to explore crevasses and moulins. Along the journey we will share local knowledge of the area, the glacier and surrounding glacial terrain, perhaps even stopping to drink the purest water which can be found in Iceland. 

 

Since our tours are private, we give you the option to go to see the glacial wall on Breidamerkurjokull or we can keep exploring the glacial formations.

THE SAPPHIRE ICE CAVE

The Sapphire Ice Cave honors its name with an array of blue & green hues and sculpture-like details. Surround yourself with magnificent blue ice and live the experience that our travelers often consider as “magical”. The Sapphire Ice Cave is unique due to several characteristics. With its many moulins and one massive opening to the sky it gives you various astonishing viewpoints for the camera and the eye alike. As the glacial river moved out the previous ground floor it seems like the cave is settled on two levels. As is nature’s way, glaciers and ice caves are ever-changing dynamic living formations that will be last seen by you and only a handful of others.

This adventure tour is perfect for those who wish to get up close and personal with the glacier. Since our tours are private they suit all experience levels. The guide assesses your personal ability and adjusts the tour to best fit the guests, so it is great both for beginners and for those who have explored glaciers before. No tour is the same and you should expect to see something unique every time.

WHERE TO FIND US?

​

The tour begins in Jökulsárlón (better known as the Glacier Lagoon) car park, which is walking distance from the Ice Lagoon and Diamond beach.

DIFFICULTY
Medium to hard difficulty - The difficulty is dependent on your personal ability. Typically the tour will include at least 2-3 hours of walking.

DURATION

6-8 Hours.

RESTRICTIONS
